On November 2, America’s attention will focus on the mid-term elections for Congress. But those of us who believe government must act against global climate change had better pay attention to another set of races: the election of 37 governors and scores of state legislators. In the years ahead, the people we elect to our 50 statehouses may be more important than the people we elect to Congress. Consider the impact on international climate treaty negotiations. At the end of November, negotiators from more than 190 nations will gather for the 16th Conference of the Parties in Cancun to continue working on a global climate pact. Germany’s First Lady Bettina Wulff traveled to Switzerland with her husband Christian on Wednesday, where they met Swiss President Doris Leuthard and her husband, First Gentleman Roland Hausin. Bettina and Roland spent the day together in Bern, making kaleidoscopes with tiny art students and checking out the Zentrum Paul Klee. On Wednesday night, Bettina swapped her suit-and-belt combo for a long, red gown as the couples attended a state banquet. Check out images from day one of Bettina’s Switzerland visit. BERKELEY, Calif. — Amid the uproar over the proposed mosque near ground zero in New York, a new Islamic college recently opened its doors in California with plans to educate a new generation of Muslim-American leaders. Founded by three prominent Islamic scholars, Zaytuna College in Berkeley is a small school with just five faculty members and 15 students in its inaugural freshman class. LOS ANGELES — An attorney for Britney Spears’ ex-husband called child abuse claims leveled at the singer by a former bodyguard baseless and motivated by money. Fernando Flores, who worked on the singer’s security detail, sued Spears on Wednesday claiming sexual harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. LONDON â Britain’s financial regulator hit Goldman Sachs International with a 17.5 million pounds ($27 million) fine on Thursday for failing to notify U.K. authorities about an investigation in the United States. It was the second-largest fine ever imposed by the Financial Services Authority, eclipsed only by the 33.32 million pounds fine announced in June against J.P. Google Instant, a new search feature that offers “results as you type,” was unveiled Wednesday at a Google search event. With Google Instant, now the default setting for the search engine, “results appear instantly as you type, helping you see where you’re headed, every step of the way,” Google explained in a blog post (Learn more about Google Instant). Although many are impressed with the new search feature, others feel it’s less helpful and for some it seems not to be working: Thursday morning, “Google Instant not working” was a top query on Google Trends.
